Update from Julia, August 2024
CCDC continues through our Community Grants scheme to support individuals and groups here in Coigach. Our energy grant is providing monthly support to help people with their energy bills: like many Highland communities, many households here experience fuel poverty. If you are spending over 10% of your monthly income on fuel bills, that is fuel poverty; over 20% and it’s classed as extreme fuel poverty. We also now have an Energy Reduction Grant of up to £3000 which can be used along with funding via Home Energy Scotland to make your home more energy efficient. Do get in touch if this is of interest to you.
Our generous grants to community groups and organisations continues to benefit people here in Coigach. Coigach Community Hall has received funding to help with a programme of events, making courses and activities more affordable; Coigach Community Rowing now have new trailers, life jackets and safety equipment, and via the North West Highlands Geopark, CCDC supported transition work with P7’s to help them prepare for the big step up to High School this month. Coigach Heritage, another beneficiary, is making progress towards An Lorg, a monument to celebrate the gutsy Coigach women of the past who thwarted the Redcoats’ attempts to evict them from the land.
CCDC has also introduced a grant for non-constituted groups, to enable fledgling groups or pilot projects. You don’t need a bank account or a constitution to apply. So far, we have funded a creative writing project in the hall, Gaelic learners’ sessions with a term of tuition, and there is now a new park bench at the children’s playground. Again, if you’d like to know more or have an idea you’d like to try out please get in touch!
Thanks to local artist Josh Hamlet who has created some artwork to illustrate some potential uses of CCDC’s Community Grants.
