Coigach Community Development Company

Heave Ho and Away We Go!

On Saturday 2nd October a hardy crew of Coigach folk led by engineers Steve Husband and Alison Hitchings gathered on the hill above Ach’a’Bhraighe to erect a 50 metre met mast: an exciting major step towards the community’s very own wind turbine. Once all the steel guys were firmly attached and the monitoring equipment connected it was all hands to the pump as the mast was readied for its ascent. Sustained by a quick visit to Collette McKenzie’s Afternoon Tea at the hall in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support, our hardworking volunteers were soon back to work on the hillside. Finally, the moment we’d all been waiting for as the mast was expertly manoeuvred skywards and just like that, it was up! A bit more twiddling and tweaking (accompanied by mysterious exchanges of alpha, brava, charlie, delta… as the various guys were secured to terra firma) and it was time to stand back and admire the elegantly towering structure. Over the coming months the mast’s meteorological equipment will gather data for the feasibility study into our proposed wind turbine, which in turn (and turning!), will give Coigach an income to spend on affordable housing and other essentials on the community wish list. CCDC would would like thank all our volunteers for their hard work  and particularly: Martin Urquhart Plant Hire (Ullapool) for his generous contribution of a digger and Steve, its skilled and tireless driver, Alison Hitchings for lending her engineering skills and our own Steve Husband who has given so generously of his time, expertise and equipment.  So thanks to those guys… and gals, it’s get met..ready, steady…blow!
