Saturday 19th May saw the second Coigach Coastal Rowing Regatta. Crews and supporters from Ullapool, North Berwick, Portobello, Port Seton, Anstruther and Newhaven gathered on Badentarbet Green for an energetic weekend of competitive rowing. Our own Coigach Lass was bathed in glory as crew members went home weighed down with locally made medals – little boats crafted out of copper piping. On Sunday a peckish crowd rowed, sailed, or made passage aboard the Patricia or Lady Nicola and headed accross the water where a well- earned brunch in Tanera’s cafe beckoned.
Our visitors appeared to have a ball and made the most of their visit to Coigach and the lovely May weather- most staying on for day or two and eagerly making plans for their return next year. Apart from the obvious attractions for rowers of taking part in the races, and the fun had by all at the evening party, what struck a chord with our guests was the sense of community in Coigach and it was noted that just about everyone in the community had contributed in some way. There was of course the inevitable question “What on earth do people do here?” – and multiple hat wearing was very much in evidence; our Directors setting the usual fine example of multi-tasking . Between them they helped put up the marquee, make the medals, set out race markers, umpired the races, baked, managed accommodation, skippered boats… and rowed of course. Nick and Rich went home happy having won at least a couple of Steve’s hand-crafted medals each.
Great to see so many young families enjoying the quality of life we have to offer here if only for a long weekend. Wouldn’t it be good if they weren’t all heading south again on Monday?
